A casino is a building that houses gambling games. A casino is also a facility where various kinds of entertainment are offered, including live performances and sports events. In the United States, there are many different casinos, and each has its own unique culture.
In Casino, based on the true story of mobster Sam “Ace” Rothstein and his Stardust hotel casino in Las Vegas, Martin Scorsese makes us feel like we’re eavesdropping on a secret world. His camera lingers on details, from a dice game to the layout of the floor. The film even has a soundtrack to help set the mood.
De Niro is excellent as Rothstein, but it’s Sharon Stone who really shines. Her portrayal of sulky, sexy blonde hustler Ginger McKenna is one of the most memorable performances of her career, and it’s not just about her physical beauty. She’s a smart and relentless seductress who can control men, despite her own troubles with addiction.
And even though the movie is a little over three hours, it never drags or loses its momentum. Thanks to superb editing and taut narration, it’s a lean, mean thriller throughout. Even those who hate mafia movies will find something to take away from this gangster classic.
