Poker is a card game in which players bet on the value of their cards. It\u2019s one of the most popular games in the world, played in casinos, in private homes and in many other places. It\u2019s often regarded as the national card game of the United States, and its rules and jargon are widely known.<\/p>\n
Depending on the rules of the game, one or more players may have to put in a certain number of chips into the pot before they\u2019re dealt their cards. These are called forced bets, and they can take the form of antes, blinds or bring-ins. Once the forced bets have been placed, betting begins in a series of intervals, or rounds. Each player must either call (match) the amount of a previous player\u2019s bet, raise it or drop out of the hand.<\/p>\n
In the first betting round, called the pre-flop betting phase, each player is dealt 2 cards that are face-down (hidden from other players). The player to the left of the button then makes a bet. If no one calls, 3 cards are then dealt face-up to the center of the table (revealed to all players). This is called the flop.<\/p>\n
Once a player has a good read on how their opponents are playing, they can start making decisions about their own bets and moves.
