Risk Factors and Protective Factors Related to Online Gambling

Online Gambling is the act of gambling via the Internet, which allows users to play casino games and poker from their homes. There are many websites that facilitate this activity and they are regulated by gaming authorities to ensure fairness and integrity. This is a very popular activity among teenagers and young adults who can be exposed to gambling through their social media channels or even in video games. This can lead to addiction and serious financial problems if not dealt with in a controlled way. In addition to the financial risks, online gambling can have psychological effects such as stress and depression, especially if the game is based on money. In addition, there are some states that have made specific forms of online gambling such as poker or blackjack illegal.

To investigate knowledge about risk factors and protective factors related to online gambling, a systematic literature review was conducted. This included articles published in peer-reviewed journals between 2010 and 2020 using the PICO framework. The search syntax was (ab(online, Internet) + ab(gambling, online, interactive) + PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome).

Findings indicate that a large number of people are addicted to online gambling. In fact, more than a billion people have gambled at least once online, and this number has increased in recent years. This is mainly due to the proliferation of new technologies, including mobile phones and social networks. Additionally, online gambling is facilitated by the availability of high-intensity products, such as electronic machines and fast betting platforms. These products are disproportionately located in areas of disadvantage, which increases the risk of gambling harm. Relational and contextual factors have also been found to be associated with the likelihood of online gambling.
